Valentine’s Day. That big day of LOVE. Or in my mind, thrashings of pink! red! doilies! cinnamon heart candy!
My mom would make us a fancy breakfast before we headed off to school. She dressed the table in a bright pink tablecloth and she would bring out her special Red Avon dinnerware. At each of our plates was a Valentine’s Day card from her as our place setting. It just felt so magical.
Having been single for most of my adult life *tooth twinkle* my prevailing memory of Valentines Day was not of my MAN or accepting a big ole bouquet of “what a surprise” roses at work like I was Miss America. Nope. I mostly remember my momma’s pink and red table. It was so just SO DAMN PRETTY. So honestly, I never really cared if I was single AF on Feb 14, I just cared that Valentine’s Day was just so pink, so red, so pretty. And forget chocolate, give me Brach’s cinnamon hearts and Little Debbies pink heart tea cakes!
Actually, my single adult V-Day tradition was watching Mr. Wrong with my sis Shannon. Have you seen it? The one with Ellen Degeneres and Bill Pullman in the 90s? I guess it was a box office failure but WE FREAKING LOVE IT. And somehow the fact that it was a box office failure makes it that much more rich? Our sisterhood’s language literally are Mr. Wrong quotes LOL. Here. Just for your perusal, a big fancy Youtube link!
Awww, yes. Valentine’s Day. Pink and red.
Yes, I’m going back to pink and red! You know? One my favorite color combos is pink and red.
Something is so shockingly feminine about dainty feminine pink smashed against a gasping, dashing red. Throw in doilies, lace–any gaudy relics of a Victorian past will do, dammit! Ugh, not to mention the puns and kitsch. I do love a good dumb Valentine’s Day pun. Cheesier the better, pleeeeeeease. Not because it’s cute but because it’s stupid and it makes me laugh LMAO.
Side note: there are some vintage valentines that HAVE NOT AGED WELL. Were people really that innocent back in the 30s and 40s when handing out cards with a big old hot dog with a flashy smile saying “let me be frank Valentine.” Like…awkward to boot.
Anyway. I decorated my house! This was our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple but we didn’t really do anything. Bah! Is that a SIN for a Millennial to admit that on her BLOG … on the INTERNET? It’s true. We decided to go to my hometown for its annual Gold Rush Days and celebrate Super Bowl instead. Yes! Our romantic weekend involved the carnival, eating a crap ton of nachos, and antiquing like old farts. Yep! Sums it up.
We actually traveled back home on V-Day. It’s a four hour long drive. My hair was in a messy bun, my butt in some lame-o leggings, not an ounce of make-up on my February face! And we listened to murder mystery podcasts. In fact, there was a “Valentine’s Day Murder” special so that was exciting.
What can I say, we are sizzlin’.
Alas.
Behold!

Yes. I’m jumping on that seasonal tiered tray thang. I’m a basic broad. IT IS IN MY BLOOD.
I’m liking this decorative trend though because I have this unreasonable obsession with seasonal candy. I swear my calling in life was probably to own a candy store. I love the usual candies, but then the forgotten nostalgic candies, the unusual candies. I’m a connoisseur of CANDY. One year I spent so much money on Halloween candy it was literally…like…sinful. I was so guilty and ashamed. It is my festive compulsion and probably needed intervention, but I’ve decided to not fight or resist anymore! I’m just gonna display it all on a tiered tray. Addiction turned homemaking! Ba ha ha.
But honestly–it really is kinda homey to be able to snag a seasonal snack here and there. Keeps the season ALIVE. So there.

Peas and carrots! Pork and beans! David and Courtney!
Believe it or not, this banner was displayed at our wedding reception lol. Like I said! I love me some KITSCH!
I think it makes a cute V-Day decorative piece. So I’ll keep it. Display it forever and ever and ever and ever…

Not the greatest quality pic. A thousand pardons. Also, I am fully aware that our artwork on the shelf needs to be rearranged. David just recently bought this new piece of Native American weaving and it competes with my Lord Huron art piece. I’ll get a smaller frame for that piece eventually and it will look more in balance eventually, just not in February 2022 LOL.
Also, those damn hearts kept twirling to the SIDE when trying to take a picture. Like. Seriously?
Anyway.

The King and Queen! Elvis and Priscilla! Yes, please, and thank you!
AGAIN! I am aware that the “Love You More” art piece needs a mat. Our home is a work in progress LOL. Please have mercy on my soul.

Our entry table. So much PINK! Because that’s they way I like it!

Hope you had lots of cinnamon hearts and Little Debbie pink heart cakes!
XOXO
Courtney
